Pride Vermont is a celebration of Vermont's queer community. Many events and activities lead up to our fabulous festival this summer on July 8, 2006.

Paper Cranes

The pride committe met last night and got a lot done. People, we are so excited to bring you this year's pride. Really, really. We may be few, but we are mighty...and super involved.

As I sat folding paper cranes for tonight's take back the night rally/march/celebration between Randy (who designed this sexy website but also has graphic design fingers in all sorts of queer pies) and Connie of SafeSpace...across from Chelsea who does work for Outright, RU12?, and others.... I just felt really connected into this nexus of queer energy. Do I sound flaky? It's true.

Not to make you feel left out, though. If you want to get involved, Pride doesn't have to be part of a laundry list of things that you do. Pride can be your one committment to the queer community.

T-minus three months until the party starts, and we're always looking for eager helping hands. Peace out.

Tacking on the Letters

Every year our alphabet soup grows a little bigger. And every year the hip, the media, and the politcally sensitive eat it all up. It's beginning to taste a little funny.

It started with simply LGB. That covered the obvious three sexualities, right? But what about those unsure of their sexuality? As it turns out, they've been labled too, with a 'Q' for 'questioning'. So much for being unsure, guys, we know you're just Q. Lets not forget about those gender-not-sexuality based identities: transexual and intersexed. Tack on a 'T' and an 'I' for them. We're up to LGBTQI, which covers just about everyone.

Not to be outdone, heterosexuals get a letter too: 'A' for 'ally'. How do you get to be a heterosexual member of the club? Through a super secret initiation rite, the 'A' in question promises lifelong allegience to the LGBTQI. Their powers combine to make the unstoppable LGBTQIA.

It should be mentioned some have proposed simply agreeing on a single word for our community. But let me quickly dismiss that crazy idea. We're all inclusive, afterall. Everyone gets a letter. Just in case we missed you, we'll tack on a little something extra. LGBTQIAXYZ123 has a much nicer ring than simply 'queer'. That, ladies, gentlemen, and others, is progress.
